You’re Not Alone — and There’s a Better Way

Living with a reactive, anxious, or overexcited dog can feel overwhelming. Maybe you’ve tried different methods, read advice online, or even worked with other trainers, but nothing seems to stick.

You love your dog, but you’re tired of the barking, pulling, or constant tension. That’s where I come in — to help you and your dog find calm, confidence, and a better way forward together.

LEUM UNUTOA, VSA-CDT, FF

I’ve dedicated my life to understanding animal behavior and helping dogs thrive in a human world. What began as a childhood fascination with how dogs think and communicate has grown into a career that now makes me one of the most trusted and sought-after trainers in Washington.

Over the past eight years, I’ve specialized in working with reactive and anxious dogs — the cases that many trainers turn away. My background in behavior science, combined with hands-on experience and advanced certifications, allows me to design training plans that don’t just change behavior on the surface, but transform how dogs feel. This is the key to lasting results.

As a certified Fear Free professional and graduate of respected training academies, I hold myself to the highest standards in the industry. My focus is always on compassion, science-backed methods, and helping families restore peace in their homes. Clients come to me when they’ve tried everything else, and they stay because they see their dogs finally relax, learn, and succeed.

What sets my work apart is my commitment to staying ahead in the field. I continue my education in behavior science, regularly study new research, and adapt cutting-edge techniques into practical, everyday solutions. I believe training should empower both the dog and the human, building trust and deepening the bond you share.

If you’re ready for real change, you can trust that I’ll bring not just expertise, but dedication, patience, and proven results. Let’s create a calmer, happier life for you and your dog — together.

Our POsitive approach

Why we stay away from aversive methods

At StayWildDog Training, we believe in using compassionate, science-based methods to teach dogs the skills they need while strengthening the bond between you and your dog.

Aversive methods, such as prong collars, shock collars, or harsh corrections, can cause:

Increased fear, anxiety and stress.

A breakdown of trust between you and your pet.

Suppression of behavior rather than resolution, leading to long-term issues.

What we do instead:

Reward-Based Training: Reinforcing desirable behaviors with treats, praise, and play.

Building Confidence: Helping your dog feel secure and empowered to make good choices.

Custom Solutions: Tailoring techniques to your dog’s unique personality, needs, and learning style.

The Science Speaks!

How Positive Reinforcement Works

Our approach is rooted in science and backed by leading experts in animal behavior and training. Decades of research have shown that reward-based, fear-free training is not only more effective but also fosters a stronger, trust-based relationship between you and your dog.

We align with the principles and recommendations of the following esteemed organizations that promote humane, science-backed training methods:

  • American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB)

The AVSAB advocates for positive reinforcement and has published comprehensive position statements on the importance of humane training. Their research emphasizes that punishment-based techniques can increase fear and anxiety in dogs.

  • International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC)

The IAABC is a global organization dedicated to advancing the understanding and application of animal behavior science. They emphasize humane, effective training methods that prioritize the emotional and physical well-being of animals. Through education and advocacy, the IAABC promotes positive reinforcement techniques as the foundation for building trust and addressing behavior challenges.

Why do certifications matter?

When you choose a dog trainer, you’re trusting them with your pet’s safety, well-being, and learning.

Certifications from respected organizations like KPA (Karen Pryor Academy), VSA (Victoria Stilwell Academy), IAABC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants), Grisha Stewart Academy, Pet Professional Guild, and others show that a trainer has met professional standards in science-backed, positive training.

These credentials mean the trainer has invested in education, practical skill-building, and ethical handling.

While some trainers claim many years of experience, time alone doesn’t guarantee quality. What truly matters is how that time was spent — whether they’ve kept up with modern, science-based methods and committed to ethical practices.

Without that growth, “years of experience” can simply mean years of outdated or harmful techniques.

Unfortunately, there has been a rise in businesses claiming professional animal experience without being able to provide proof.

This can put both you and your dog at risk, as unqualified trainers may use harmful or outdated methods.

If you ever wonder whether a trainer’s qualifications are legitimate,

check the organization’s directory or database that your trainer states they are certified under.

Trainers who are truly certified will be listed. If you can’t find their name where they claim to be certified, ask questions.

Your dog deserves a trainer you can trust.
